Inequalities and discrimination based on social class
Can one hand clap?
When you are poor, you are not different from a person with one hand but who want to clap. As much as the person tries, clapping will not be possible. This is the basis of the suffering, stigmatization and discrimination that poor people face.
Inadequate and discrimination perpetuates poverty. When your fundamentals rights and freedoms are overlooked, you are being condemned to vagaries of poverty. When you are mistreated because of your physical, mental, sensory or intelligence capabilities, you are being condemned to impoverishment. When government policies are regressive or they are enacted in a manner to protect the property of a few, then poverty is being alleviated. When investments in education or basic health care are not done in marginalized areas or developments are not centered equally throughout a country, poverty is being entrenched.
How can we Pressure the Government to Eradicate Discrimination?
A framework should be designed so as to minimize any mistreatment, inequality and discrimination. The framework should be structured to realize the economic and social rights of both the poor and the rich while remaining feasible, affordable and implementable.
The following measures can be adopted to achieve this :
1. A specific framework should be put in place to address the economic and social needs of the poor, the disadvantages and the marginalized groups in a country.
2. The government should set up indicators to identify and punish any form of discrimination. This can be achieved through establishing discrimination policies, regulations and laws and eventually meting out punishments for law-breakers and offenders. The laws should bind both public and private entity so as realize its intentions.
3. There should be an on-going process to identify and measure the realization of urgent economic and social needs of the poor and the disadvantaged in a country.
4. Policies should be enacted to punish any entity that violates constitutional human rights and freedoms.
Other ways in which the oppressed themselves can fight discrimination include:
The poor, or oppressed, are strongly urged and advised to speak up on any atrocities or acts of discrimination which they face especially while seeking public services to which they are entitled to but are denied due to corruption and discrimination.
Incase of discrimination in workplaces, the oppressed should let the coworker or supervisor or whoever is discriminating against them know that they are offended and if no refraining from such acts in the future then action will be taken.
Also some workplace discriminations may be work related. In such incidences, one is advised to fight the battle by over-performing. Also professionalism and high productivity will decrease any chances of being discriminated against.
Embrace dialogue and discussion
Diplomacy is a practical means of fighting discrimination. It’s good to try to talk to the discriminating person. In workplaces, the intervention of superior can help solve the situation.
Because of discrimination, the poor people may become frustrated to the point of quitting their ambitions. This is fatal and never advisable. In any instance where such a person faces any form of discrimination, he/she need to take steps necessary to alleviate the obstacles. Reporting to the authorities should be considered.
If there are chances that the authority may not follow up because they too disregard the poor person the discriminated person should join forums/groups which provide direct action to help poor people fight discrimination.
If discrimination persists the poor should revolt.
In cases where discrimination becomes so severe and the poor can’t find any appropriate method of mitigating such actions of discrimination, then they should join hands and make a revolution. Through demonstration on the streets or nailing down of tools, a clear message is sent to the oppressors that enough is enough and things should now change.
There are organizations or groups which can help the poor come together and organize a revolution such as the previous owners of this site, HCAP. Still there are other organizations which could help such poor people and they are supposed to join them and unite against oppression and discrimination.
